Many waters in the Bedfordshire area
were stocked including Claydon and the Tring Reservoir Complex. In 1943 a
catfish of nearly 50lb was found dead at Marsworth Reservoir and this fish
was believed to have been one of the original 7 fish stocked. Fortunately for
today’s angler in 1951 due to reports that wildlife were being harmed at
Woburn the catfish numbers were thinned down. This event led to Leighton
Buzzard Angling Club and Dawley Angling Association being allowed to remove
fish and stock their waters. The Leighton Buzzard Angling Club
fish were put into Claydon’s lakes and Dawley Angling Association stocked
Withy Pool in Shropshire. During the 1960’s anglers moved a lot of catfish
into the surrounding lakes and this is how Tiddenfoot Pit, Jones Pit and
other famous English catfish lakes were stocked. With weather conditions on the
continent being warmer in general than in the UK their catfish have grown at
a much greater rate than ours. Each year now sees a increasing number of
100lb plus fish being landed from France and Spain. Fish to over 600lb are
reported commercially caught in Russia. |
